Six Words Speak Volumes

Not Quite What I Was PlanningI found out recently that I’m a part of a very cool project that began with the fine folks over at Smith Mag.

It’s a simple notion–write your life in six measly words–that seems to have caught on: what started as a fun web project is now a book called “Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure.”Apparently, editors Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser’s (love that last name) quota for the obsure was woefully low; my entry appears on page 174, albeit with fine company. Even the New York Times and NPR are in on the half-dozen harps.

Nicely packaged book and a project inspired by a perfect example of le mot prĂ©cis:”Baby shoes for sale. Never used.” Attributed to Hemingway, of course.

Pagemate! Lovely to meet you. I also know Stephanie Lessing personally — I think we should have a Page 174 meetup some day.

    Nicely done.

On a sidenote, I’ve always thought Hemingway’s entry should have been “Baby shoes for sale. Worn once.”

Congrats. That book is getting a lot of positive attention around the web.
Do you know if there is a list of contributors online? I’m thinking a bunch of other folks I know must be in there.

Groovy, I’m in there too. Wrote about it a few times on my blog. It’s been fun watching this thing take off. I was part of a 6-word memoir reading in SF this weekend.
